Green Bay - - 10pm - We have talked to WR Jordy Nelson, QB Brian Brohm, and CB Patrick Lee, the Packers first three picks in the 2008 draft.
Brohm dodged questions about whether it was smart to stay one more year at Louisville after his head coach Bobby Petrino left for the Falcons. Nelson seems like a Ted Thompson kind of guy. Good speaker, to the point. Lee, who grew up in Miami, sounded as if he wasn't sure exactly how far north Green Bay really is. A little intimated by the climate for football season. Probably saw the NFC Championship on TV and is wondering what he got himself into. 9:30pm - Packers Head Coach Mike McCarthy met with reporters. Will Arron Rodgers be disappointed they drafted a QB with their second pick? "No, I'm not concerned," said McCarthy. "I don't feel Aaron is concerned. You know, the focus for Aaron Rodgers needs to be what's in front of him, and that's the task at hand, the task of leading our offense. He is our quarterback and that is our focus." McCarthy said he did not call Rodgers after Brohm was selected by Green Bay. "No, I didn't feel the need. I actually just talked to Aaron yesterday. He's down in Texas on a personal matter so we actually talked about that. But no, Aaron's fine. He knows how we feel about him, he knows what his role is on our football team, and he'll be given every opportunity to be successful here as the Green Bay Packers' quarterback." I know being a son of Archie Manning has not hurt Peyton or Eli. But a concern I have about Brohm is making the adjustment to the NFL, after following your dad, and your brothers at quarterbacks, who are now either coaches or running the operations at the University of Louisville. Is that a plus, to meet the challenge of your elders? Or will he have to adjust to no having any relatives at 1265 Lombardi Avenue to watch his back? I asked McCarthy what he thought. "I think he had external pressures not normal to the normal student athlete that goes through any university," replied McCarthy. "You look at what he's accomplished in that environment, and I think this will be a great opportunity for him to step up to the next level. He's played in pressure games, he's played in big games there in the Big East and he's carried a lot of responsibility because of his family heritage there. I think it's all great experience that he can draw from." As for the Packers first selection, WR Jordy Nelson, McCarthy said he liked what he saw. "His versatility. Just a big, strong, physical receiver. Loved his toughness, particularly yards after the catch was the thing I admired the most. If you watch our receivers the last two years, the production that we've been able to obtain in our three-step and five-step passing game he's a perfect fit. Also his body type, and I think he'll be an excellent contributor on special teams."
How do the Packers think they will use their third pick, Patrick Lee, Auburn? "We're looking at him primarily as a corner," said McCarthy. "Potentially play some nickel. Just like his size, his physicalness, you see the tackling, his aggressiveness, and the bump and run. I think he really fits the temperament, the attitude, in our style of play." 8:00pm - Packers GM Ted Thompson speaks to reporters, telling them he heard boos again from fans inside the Lambeau Field Atrium, after announcing the selection of WR Jordy Nelson as his first pick. For the second year in a row, Thompson selected a player at a position of strength, wide receiver. Last year, it was DT Justin Harrell. The Packers emerged from camp with 11 DT's on the roster, trading DT Corey Williams on the eve of free agency. Thompson made it clear that the selection of Brian Brohm was in no way a threat to Aaron Rodgers. "Aaron knows it's his gig," said Thompson. He said he told the same thing to Brohm, that he would be brought in as Rodgers back-up, and the team would develop him into an NFL player. He seemed very pleased to have been able to get Brohm. Thompson said when he made the trade with the Jets, to get two picks, and drop from 30 to 36, there were still 4 or 5 players on the board, including Brohn and Nelson that they had a high level of interest in, and thought they could get at 36. Thompson said he had been keen on Nelson for some time, and tried to keep it "under wraps". I asked Thompson if Virginia Tech CB Brandon Flowers was one of the players the Packers were considering with their first pick. "We liked Brandon Flowers. But I'm not going to get into where we had him rated," said Thompson. And then he ended the press conference. 7:45pm - Round 2, (60th overall). The Packers select CB Patrick Lee, 6'0", 200lbs., Auburn University. Lee has also played safety, and served as a kickoff returner. 7:25pm - Round 2, (56th overall from Browns with trade for DT Cory Williams in Feb. '08). Packers make their second pick, in Round 2, 56th overall, QB Brian Brohm, 6'2", 230lbs., Louisville University. Brohm, projected to go in the first round, spent the afternoon waiting, while network cameras watched. QB Chad Henee, Michigan, also had a long wait, but went with the next pick, 57th overall, to the Dolphins. Brohm says he shares the same agent as Henee, and said he was relieved they finally got picked. Ron Jaworski pointed out in his evaluation that Brohn has good vision, can turn his back on a play action fake, turn and read the safety, and accurately decide whether to throw to the crossing route underneath, or his receiver on a deep route downfield. Brohn says he had little contact with Green Bay, but that he had heard the Packers don't let on if they are interested in you as a potential pick. Did he ever think Brett Favre's retirement would result in him being the Packers second pick in the draft, the second QB to be taken overall? "No, I was just sorry to see Brett retire because I loved watching him play," repllied Brohm. Brohm had an usual support group at Louisville. One of his older brothers, Jeff, was his QB coach. Jeff was the Cardinals QB from 1989-93, and spent some time in the NFL. Another brother is the director of football operations. And his father, Oscar, was a QB at the school in 1968-69, and is still involved in the program. 5:48pm - Second round. Packers make their first pick of the '08 draft, WR Jordy Nelson, 6'2", 217lbs, Kansas State. Receivers Coach Jimmy Robinson was brought in to speak to the media because the Packers have another pick coming up. Robinson says he could not say if Nelson is more of a pocession type receiver vs. a deep threat because they felt he could do it all. Catch passes in traffic, fight for the ball on the sideline, and beat some good CB's in the Big 12 like Aqib Talib of Kansas. 5:45pm - Chiefs with the 35th pick take CB Brandon Flowers, Virginia Tech, projected to be a pick the Packers were interested in. 5pm - Packers trade their 1st round pick (30 overall) to the Jets. In return, Green Bay received a 2nd round pick (36th overall) and a 4th round pick (113th overall) that the Jets received from the Saints).
